The Foxtrot
The Foxtrot is one of the most popular social and competitive ballroom dances.
In 1914 a Vaudeville actor named Charles Fox created the dance. Charles was married to Yansci Dolly, a New York Theatre dancer, of the then famous Dolly Sisters. Between regular theatre acts Fox entertained the enthusiastic crowd with his new dance which became know as the Fox Trot.
The dance became hugely popular as people tried to mimic the unusual trotting steps. Later the dance became more standardized as the 'trotting' steps were deemed two awkward for the ladies. It became more of flowing and gliding dance yet the name Foxtrot was kept. Another talented American G.K. Anderson and his competition partner Josephine Bradley brought the dance to London.
The Foxtrot and Waltz share many of the same steps and movements. The Foxtrot has a flowing and perky personality with a very wide variety of steps that can be performed.
The Foxtrot is a very social dance as well as staple at all ballroom competitions.
